Pepper spray is yet another name for oleoresin capsicum spray or OC spray. It contains a natural substance that is extracted from pepper (yes, the spice you use in dishes). Pepper essence is a skin irritant. It may cause burning pain and tears in the eyes, running nose, dry mouth and irritation of breathing passages. If you so much as dip your finger in a bowl of pepper extract, you'll feel discomfort which will last for a few hours. The extract is an oil which means that it doesn't wash off effortlessly even under running water. Even when consumed, the burning feeling stays on for several minutes after you've consumed the highly spiced food.
Transporting pepper spray is standard, and many people are more familiar with it than others. In particular, young women are told to carry pepper spray everywhere they go to avoid being assaulted by rapists. Women are not the only ones who employ pepper spray. Any person who doesn't want to be attacked by a robber should always carry one.
Why Pepper Spray is Standard as a Self-Defense Weapon
1. It's Effective
Pepper spray is currently employed by nearly every law enforcement agency all through the country because it is more effective than mace or tear gas. If you have experienced touching your face after you've handled pepper at some point in cooking or food preparation, you already know of the fact that pepper essence may cause a burning sensation. The ready-to-use pepper sprays are available in small bottles but the constituent is the same. It works on animals as well as human beings and its negative effects fully wear off in about 2 hours. Concentrated pepper extract could cause severe pain when sprayed in abundant amounts into eyes or face.
2. It's Not Toxic
Even though the term "safe" is relative, spraying pepper extract on any individual who tries to bother you or a rabid dog that wants to sink its rabies-ridden fangs into you will not induce mortality. What it will induce is agonizing pain that will immediately remove all thoughts of belligerence or attack. Do you remember the last time you accidentally chomped on a raw chili pepper? You could not speak, think or do anything else other than to grab the nearest water glass.
Pepper spray is nontoxic enough for you to apply on food, but in the perspective of self-defense, it can be used to chase away attackers. Pepper spray also doesn't instantly cause lasting harm. Pepper spray is the best non-fatal personal protection tool available and it really works to chase away muggers.
3. You Can Assemble One in Your Own Home
Home prepared pepper spray is just as effective as a store-bought one. If you don't have access to a ready-to-use can of pepper spray, you can make one yourself. Numerous methods of creating homemade pepper spray are described in other sources, but the gist of it is that you can create it at home. Capsicum from which seeds and stems have been removed is combined, in powder form, with a solvent, to melt some of the capsicum powder. The intention is to essence the essential oil capsicum and choose a container that will allow dispensing the extract as a spray (like a vaporizer). The essence contains capsaicinoid and terpene, and it must be mixed with a solution that can maintain these components.
